Maj Gen BC Khanduri has been thrust on the BJP Legislature Party in Uttarakhand amid much dissent. BS Koshyari, who worked hard for five years to get BJP where it is now in the state, has been sidelined. By propping Gen Khanduri, the BJP has committed the same mistake the Congress did by handing over charge to Narain Dutt Tiwari in 2002. Gen Khanduri does not enjoy the confidence of the majority of his partymen and is a stranger to local state politics.
Sooner or later finance minister P Chidambaram will realise how wrong he was when commented: ‘People have money in their pockets, people are willing to spend’. Increase in education outlay could have been done within the budget, instead of the 1 per cent increase in cess. This budget will be the last nail in the UPA’s coffin. The Cpngress should not ignore the warnings from Punjab and Uttarakhand.
Judging the judges
Judicial activism is fine, but the judiciary itself needs to look within as the cases of corruption making headlines prove. Why can’t we have parallel judicial courts — one managed by the government and another by luminaries of the profession? If we can have government as well as private medical and engineering colleges, why not private courts with a representative governing body like Sebi and Trai?
It is good news that the Delhi-Gurgaon Express highway has been opened to the public and journey time between the two cities reduced by 15-20 minutes. But most drive recklessly, often resulting in accidents. It is high time we enforce speed limits on Delhi roads.
