FAVOURITES SONNET were shown the door by Vidya Jai Academy in the first semifinal of the Lala Raghubir Singh tournament at the Modern School ground on Friday. Thanks to a superb bowling display by Sparsh Jain, who took four wickets for just six runs, VJA defeated their more fancied opponents by 37 runs.
Sparsh first sent Sonnet opener Samarth Singh packing for a duck and followed it up by snaring skipper Rahul Dhiwan for 10. None of the Sonnet batsmen could stand up to the gritty display put up by VJA and they finally faltered in their run chase, managing just 136 runs in reply to 173 all out by VJA.
In his second spell, Sparsh, the left-arm spinner, removed Amit Baru and Ashish Malhotra for 24 and 1 respectively. In fact, Sparsh's bowling figures on Friday are the best till date in the tournament.
A beaming Sparsh, who was declared 'man-of-the-match' said, "When the skipper asked me to bowl the first over, I was slightly taken aback. But then I decided that come what may, I have to defend my team's total and in the process I got wickets as well," he said.
Sonnet skipper Rahul Dhiwan rued the absence of key batsmen in his team. "A few of our key batsmen did not play today. Besides we did not get good starts either with the bat or the ball," he lamented.
Scores: VJA 173 all out (R Prakash 54, S Rana 29; S Sehrawat 3-32, G Kochhar 2-28) beat Sonnet 136 all out (G Kochhar 31, S Sehrawat 29; S Jain 4-6, A Chandela 2-25).
