The new government received a telling-off by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday as she asked it to ensure all documents were made available to MPs before parliamentary debates.

The trigger was the protest from RJD MP Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav who complained on the eve of the discussion on the water resource ministry’s demand for grants that MPs had not received all relevant documents.

“How can the MPs compare the performance during the UPA rule and the future road map of the NDA government?” he asked.

Mahajan then read out a statement, saying, “I would urge upon the government to ensure that in future the Detailed Demands, the Outcome Budgets and also the Annual Reports of the Ministries, whose Demands are to be discussed in the House, are made available to the Members sufficiently in advance.”

She added, “Although there is no rule which bars the discussion on the Demand for Grant for want of documents, I am of the view that these documents should be made available to the members in advance so they get sufficient time to study them.”
