EFFORTS WOULD be made to open special schools for children with cerebral palsy and mental disability as also visually handicapped, hearing impaired and with such other disabilities, in such districts where special schools are not functioning at present.

District collectors or divisional officers of Panchayat and Social Justice Department will select recognised voluntary organisations for this purpose before the commencement of the next academic session (2007-08).

In such districts where there are no eligible voluntary organisations available, the schools will be conducted through the District Red Cross Societies or District Handicap Welfare and Development Committees.

Proposals to this effect will be made to the commissioner of Panchayat and Social Justice by the district collectors and the commissioner will forward it to the State Government for approval under the Destitute Fund.

Already some private special schools are being run in some districts through grants of the Panchayat and Social Justice Department.

Such special schools are being run at Bhopal, Vidisha, Indore and Ujjain for mentally disabled children. Schools for visually impaired are being run at Betul, Indore, Jhabua, Gwalior, Rewa and Sidhi, for hearing impaired children at
Indore and Ujjain and for orthopaedically handicapped children at Khandwa, Ratlam and Chhatarpur. Special Government schools are being run Jabalpur, Bhopal, Sagar, Khargone, Gwalior, Rewa, Ujjain and Indore.
