A 11-year-old girl had to pay with her life for the reckless acts of some youth who were speeding on their bikes at Purai Paith area of Dasna town near NH-24 in Ghaziabad late Friday night.
Purai Paith is a residential area and the four youth had been trying to get ahead of each other when they hit Sophia, who was visiting her uncle's house in the locality on the eve of Eid-ul-Zuha.
"She was trying to dry her mehndi which she had applied for Eid-ul-Zuha. Suddenly, four young men on their bikes passed by at high speed and hit her. The impact was such that Sophia was dragged 10-12 feet and suffered critical head injuries," said Vakeel Ahmed, Sophia's uncle.
"We rushed her to two hospitals in the hope that she may survive. But she was declared brought dead. We were able to nab one biker and two bikes while the others fled," he added.
The incident took place around 10.30pm on Friday night and the youth were riding Apache and Pulsar bikes.
Soon after the incident, the police seized the two bikes and arrested one accused. The police have registered an FIR under Sections 304A, 279 and 427 of IPC at Masuri police station. Police said that the accused were driving at high speed through the lanes of the locality.
"They were racing. Locals told us that these boys perform stunts on bikes and speed through the lanes, causing nuisance. One of them has been nabbed while the others will be arrested soon," station house officer AP Singh, Masuri, told Hindustan Times.
Officials said the victim hit the road and a heap of bricks, which might have caused severe head injuries. They said she might have died on the spot due to critical head injuries. She got stuck in the bike and was dragged to some distance.
