LESS THAN a year after he raped a teenager inside a police outpost at Marine Drive, dismissed constable Sunil More was declared guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison by an additional sessions court on Monday.

The speedy trial was a result of the Bombay HC setting a deadline of April 30 for the judgment. "The accused was a serving constable and used his position and power to threaten the 16-year-old victim and her friend who was present with her at the time of the incident," said the judge. The incident took place on April 21 last year. More was held guilty under sections 342, 506(ii) and 376(ii)(a)(b).

While acquitting him of the charge of being drunk on duty, the court said, "The medical report shows that the alcohol in your bloodstream was within the permissible limit. However, I feel that at the time of the incident you were heavily drunk. It's the police who're at fault as they did not collect your blood samples on time.”
