Spiderman star James Franco is all set to star in Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes. The actor, who shot to fame playing Peter Parker’s friend-turned-foe Harry Osborn in the superhero franchise, will play a young scientist in 20th Century Fox’s new film.The 32-year-old actor beat out competition from a number of Hollywood actors for the coveted role.
The movie is being directed by Rupert Wyatt, Variety reported.Franco met Wyatt this weekend to discuss the project, according to insiders.
Described as an origin story, Rise of the Apes is set in present day San Francisco and deals with the aftermath of man’s experiments with genetic engineering that lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.Franco will play a driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes.
The visual effects house WETA Digital is planning to employ ground-breaking technology in the movie and for the first time the apes will be photo-realistic rather than costumed actors.
The film, which starts shooting July 5, will release on June 24 next year.
