One cool morning when it was drizzling outside and I lay on my easy chair awaiting the newspaper, I began thinking what makes a good human spiritual role model. The train of thought ran as follows.

Now that Kaliyug is on, one’s good deeds fetch high dividends. ‘Why’, ‘what’, ‘how’ questions are avoided as it leads to the past and negativism. Confusion or entanglement has no scope – simple living and clear thinking wrought miracles.

With humans, work should begin and end well. If we are certain He is with us, matters move in the right direction. In which case, His voice rings in our ears like music. Having few wants and self-reliance are called for. A spiritual being thrives in His remembrance.

Blessings are received from seniors, and youngsters are blessed and patted on the back. A role model deliberately makes attempts of getting rid of habits of nagging, grumbling, jealousy, envy, greed. He also thinks constructive and has childlike nature overlooking matters that don’t matter. With him there is not an iota of vanity or arrogance. His smile is cheering.

An important component of such a spiritual personality is his being soul-conscious; treating the body as just a means of physical activity. He has joy of associating with Him – which companion is always at beck and call.

He is time-conscious. He is perpetually thinking of benefitting the maximum possible. There is no laziness or carelessness; his each moment is a time of accomplishment. He removes human frailties by quietude and power of silence. Like Ganesha, he is a remover of obstacles. He gives priority to the presence of the Supreme, not worldly affairs. He is a treasure of unconditional love and happiness. He lives for making others joyful.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says, “This god’s gift to folk with spiritual inclination and lifestyle brings them their needs before time without ever asking.” Can anyone wish for more? At which point the thud of the newspaper shakes me up into awakening.
