SPO killed in gun fire with militants

A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and two security personnel were injured in a gun battle with militants in Baramulla district of North Kashmir on Tuesday.

A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and two security personnel were injured in a gun battle with militants in Baramulla district of North Kashmir on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip off, Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group of local police had launched a search operation at Sheikhpora village of Rafiabad, 65 kms from Srinagar, on Tuesday morning but were fired upon by the hiding militants, security officials said.

The joint team also retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle two jawans of Rashtriya rifles and the SPO was injured.

SPO Manzoor Qureshi and sepoy Mahesh Koushal were shifted to Srinagar for treatment where Qureshi succumbed to his injuries.

They said reinforcements have been rushed to the village and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants, who fled the scene after the initial exchange of fire.
