A 32-year-old man from Malad, on Friday, allegedly killed a bar girl after being spurned by her.
The accused, identified as Vijay Gausar, later surrendered at the Mira Road police station.
Gausar, who is married and has children, was in love with Kanchan, who worked at Bindiya Bar in Mira Road. Gausar often frequented the bar to visit Kanchan.
“Kanchan only considered Gausar a good friend but the latter thought she reciprocated his feelings. To win her over, he would spend a lot of money on her and had also lent her lakhs of rupees,” said a police officer from Mira Road police station on condition of anonymity.
On Thursday night, Gausar visited the bar to meet Kanchan. After waiting in vain for a few hours, Gausar decided to go over to her house, located in Shanti Nagar, Mira Road (East).
On reaching there, Gausar found Kanchan with another man. Accusing Kanchan of cheating on him, Gausar allegedly demanded that Kanchan return the money he had loaned to her.
During the ensuing verbal feud, Kanchan told Gausar that he had misread her feelings for him.
“In a fit of rage, Gausar pushed Kanchan to the ground and strangled her. He left the house and surrendered himself at the police station,” said Anand Khobare, assistant police inspector from the Mira Road police station.
A police team was dispatched to Kanchan’s house. They admitted Kanchan to a local hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Gausar has been arrested under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in court on Saturday.
