The 434-km long Srinagar-Leh National Highway has been closed for vehicular traffic, officials said on Friday.
Traffic on the strategic highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, was suspended on Thursday as the authorities found the road unfit for traffic at many places, the officials said.
They said the Kashmir divisional commissioner has ordered suspension of vehicular traffic of all types on the Zojila-Drass road as recommended by the chief engineer, Project Beacon.
The divisional commissioner, along with Beacon officials, inspected the highway and found it slippery at many places, including Zojilla and ordered its closure, they said.
The highway remains closed for nearly six months every year.
