Srinivasan’s family lawyer accompanies Gurunath to Mumbai

“They (Mumbai police) have got an alleged offender with no offense,” said former Tamil Nadu advocate general PS Raman, a friend of the Srinivasan family, who accompanied Gurunath Meiyappan on a special chartered flight to the city after the accused was summoned by the Mumbai police for questioning.

Raman, who is also a counsel for BCCI and TNCA, said that the police were being extra cautious on account of pressure from the media.

“They are yet to find out what he has done, so they have taken him in police remand. Now they say not spot fixing or match fixing, but betting. This is such a case that anyone can plead guilty and walk out by paying a fine of Rs 200,” he said.

Raman, however, will not be fighting Meiyappan, and is only in the city to provide moral support and legal advice.

“It is such a small offense for which Meiyappan would not run away. The quantum of betting is irrelevant,” he added.

“Just because Meiyappan’s number was found in the phone does not mean that he is guilty. He has known Vindoo Randhawa for the past three years or so and was introduced to celebrities by the film actor,” he added.

Raman was only able to meet Gurunath once after he was taken into police custody on Saturday. “He is being treated well and is cooperating with the police,” said Raman.
