A 17-year-old SSC student was run over by a local train near Kalwa railway station on Monday afternoon.

Ruby Sharma was on her way back home after her exam when she met with the accident around 2.15pm.

Senior police inspector HS Jadhav of Thane government railway police, said, “Ruby was a resident of Anandnagar slums in Kalwa (East). She was crossing the tracks when a local train hit her. She sustained severe head injuries and her leg was fractured.”

“The guard informed the stationmaster, who in turn informed us. She was rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital and was admitted in the emergency ward, but she died soon after,” he added

Ruby’s father works as an autorickshaw driver and she was the eldest of his two children.

“She was a student of Kalwa Hindi School and was good at her studies. She never failed her exams. She had her science exam on Monday and her exam centre was in Manisha Nagar in Kalwa (West).” said Lalji Sharma, Ruby’s father.

“She was my eldest daughter. I only have a son now,” said a distraught Sharma.

Local residents said there should be a foot overbridge to cross the tracks as many people had lost their lives at the spot. Railway officials, however, said people continued to cross railway tracks despite several awareness campaigns advising them against it.
