india Updated: Jan 29, 2007 01:44 IST

St Michael’s Cricket Academy (SMCA) turned out to be the only team from Bhopal which entered the quarterfinals of the all-India Mayank Chaturvedi Memorial cricket tournament being held at Old Campion grounds. SMCA won by 220 runs against the Youth Club on Sunday. It is the biggest win by any team in the tournament.

It was also a day of records. SMCA defeated Hoshangabad by six wickets in the first match. After winning the toss in their second match, SMCA opted to bat first. However, the team lost the first wicket when Salman Baig was out at 21 runs.

But Rameez Khan, the best batsman award recipient of Dr Govind  Narayan Memorial inter-school cricket tournament, went on to score 129 runs off 106 deliveries, including 19 boundaries. The team scored 334 runs, the biggest total of the tournament so far. Shahab and Sameer scored 43 and 34 runs, respectively.

The Youth Club used nine bowlers. Karan took two wickets, the highest for his team.  After a dismal performance with the ball, the Youth Club struggled with the bat too. Chasing a big target, the team was all out for 114 runs. Except skipper Piyush and Virendra, other batsmen failed to touch double figures. Piyush scored 52 runs and Virendra 34.

For SMCA, Usman and Sargam claimed three wickets each. Sameer scalped two wickets while Muqtadir and Shahab took one wicket each.

Chief guest and Rampur Baghelan MLA  Harsh Singh presented ‘HT Man of the Match’ trophy to Rameez Khan. On the occasion, Bhopal Development Authority (BDA) Chairman Dhruv Narayan Singh, BDCA secretary Dr Shafquat Mohammad Khan, Rajat Mohan Verma, Sushil Singh and others were present.
