Seven men were arrested for attacking a school student and slashing her ear off in the Verinag area of south Kashmir.

The incident sparked massive protests in Verinag as people demanded strict action from the police. The victim, a class 10 student, had just returned from a school picnic and was waiting for her parents to pick her up when the incident occurred.

It was alleged that the group of men had stalked the students all the way to the picnic and back. A sharp edged weapon was used to attack her.

A complaint was filed by the principal of the Girls Higher Secondary School, at a police station in Dooru.

The seven arrested are all locals of Dooru and they have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The victim was rushed to a hospital in Srinagar and has been discharged. Her family said she will have to undergo a series of tests.

The police said that they have fast tracked the case.

Meanwhile, the station house officer of the Dooru police station has been suspended for giving wrong information to the media.

He told a local newspaper that the girl’s ear got cut when she fell off the bus.
