BHOPALPEX-2007 – a three-day district-level philatelic exhibition was inaugurated at Manas Bhawan by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s general manager, Mahesh Shukla on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Shukla said though stamp collection used to be a favourite hobby of the rulers of the yore, it has increased multi-fold over the years. “We get to know about a nation’s cultural heritage and nature through its postage stamps,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of Bhopalpex, the senior superintendent (Post Offices), Bhopal Division, Brajes Kumar said as the Speed Post service of Postal Department has reached its 20th year, a special first-day cover has been issued to commemorate the anniversary.
“There are 100 speed post centres and 97 international speed post centres,” he added. The Postal Department has also issued a stamp commemorating the birth centenary of freedom fighter and educationist Manohar Bhai Patel.
The philatelic exhibition has been categorised into three groups — senior, junior and invitation. More than 7500 postage stamps have been showcased in 60 frames. The special attractions of the exhibition are stamps related to world rail tour, Indian freedom struggle and others.
The Postal Department has also organised contests in the exhibition and prizes will be given to winners. The exhibition will remain open for visitors from 10 am to 8 pm daily.
