It’s a script every Telugu movie scriptwriter would have loved to get his hands on.
Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi’s daughter, Srija(19), eloped with her boyfriend, a final year engineering student, and married him at an Arya Samaj temple in the city on Wednesday morning.
Soon after, Srija alleged that her family had confined her in a room for two months before she managed to escape.
“We are both adults and there is nothing that can stop us from marrying,” Srija said in a statement. If the news of the ‘secret’ marriage was not shocking enough for the south Indian movie star, there was more in store for him. The video recording of the marriage ceremony, which was solemnized in the presence of the groom’s friends, were aired in all TV channels.
The groom, Shirish Bhardwaj, is a Brahmin while the girl belongs to the powerful Kapu community.
The incident could not have come at a more inopportune moment. Chiranjeevi was expected to launch a political party soon keeping an eye on the 2009 polls. A member of the powerful Kapu community, which constitutes eight per cent of the total Andhra electorate and have an influence over 60 assembly seats, the mega star is held in high esteem by the community and was contemplating a party to cash on the community’s disenchantment with the Congress and Telugu Desam, the two mainline parties.
After the marriage was solemnized, the couple went round the city interacting with media persons. “We were in love for the past four years. I am happy to get married,” Srija said.
