It’s that time of the year when annual calendars shot by celebrity photographers, featuring Bollywood stars and models get unveiled. This year too, these calendars are high on glamour, star power and aesthetics. And it’s not just about glam-sham, some celebrities have actually shot for calendars, for a cause.

While you may think last year’s hassles would sober Kingfisher down, its calendar stays as hot and exotic as ever. Envied by many for shooting gorgeous women, Atul Kasbekar reveals that this time too, the shots are sizzling. “There are fresh faces like half-Indian models Priya Emmanuel and Elena Fernandes who are absolutely gorgeous. We have shot at Kruger National Park and Cape Town in South Africa,” he says, adding, “While many think camera work is all fun and play, it takes hard work.

You’ll always be afraid of getting a reaction like, ‘kuch jama nahi iss bar’- so you have to take up that challenge of being different.”
Ace photographer Dabboo Ratnani’s calendar, known for a starry lineup, includes Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Arjun Rampal this year. “I have shot these stars everywhere — from Lonavala to London,” says Ratnani, who calls shooting a calendar “a form of art,” and has featured calendar debutants — Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, this year.

Another interesting calendar is the one shot by marketing professionals Rajesh Ramakrishnan and Shilpi Choudhuri, and it’s based on sun signs. Bollywood stars here have posed for their own astro month and proceeds from calendar sale will go to a city-based NGO.

“Coordinating with celebrities was a challenge, but my passion for photography helped me rope in 19 prominent people... While Manoj Bajpai took time off a fashion week, Karan Johar conceptualised his shot himself and completed the shoot in 10 minutes,” says Ramakrishnan.

This year, the Pirelli calender has been given a sober twist. It showcases fully-clad models, high on rugged glam. Photographer Steve McCurry, known for his Afghan girl portrait, has shot the calendar, which features models Petra Nemcova, Karlie Kloss and a pregnant Adriana Lima, among others.
