Fast and furious, Dale Steyn is one of the most intense characters you will come across on the cricket field. He fears none, well, except compatriot Jacques Kallis. "He is the most difficult batsman to bowl at. Rest of them are easy," says Steyn. "I still don't know why batsmen are taking so much time to figure me out," Steyn smiles.
It's normally hard to get the South African speedster to talk anything but cricket, but he has a different side to him as well, one that loves the wild and his 'family' of dogs.
His face lights up the moment the conversation turns to matters back home. Born in Phalaborwa in Transvaal Province, a region known for its wilds, Steyn has been close to nature. The 28-year-old is also passionate about beaches, especially surfing, like many South Africans. Steyn expressed his condolences on Twitter after the death of a young surfer in a shark attack in Cape Town two days ago.
"When I'm in South Africa, I make it a point to take my dogs out to the beach," says Steyn. "I have four dogs --- Sadi, a Retriever, and Oscar, Ruby and Bella, who are Yorkies," he says. Steyn's girlfriend Jeanne Kietzmann too shares his love for animals.
"With my work schedule, it's difficult for me to spend quality time with my dogs. But whenever I'm home, I make it a point to spend as much time as possible with my dogs," says Steyn.
Must be missing them? "Yeah, very much," smiles Steyn.
