Normal life has been disrupted in the city as gutsy winds and a strong hailstorm destroyed thatched houses and disrupted traffic and power supply.
The storm, which lashed the city and its outskirts for more than an hour at 9.30 pm on Saturday, uprooted trees and blowed off thatched houses in many areas in and around the city, police said.
Although there was no report of any casualty, electric supply was disrupted as trees fell on power chords.
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) sources said power supply lines from Chandrapur that feeds the city were snapped as a huge tree fell over electricity wires.
Restoration work is on full swing and power supply is expected to resume soon.
Traffic was also affected in major thoroughfares of the city as uprooted trees blocked roads.
Kamrup (metro) district authorities has launched an operation to clear the debris for maintaining normal traffic flow.
