In a strange theft case, a passenger was arrested at Kolkata Airport for stealing a life jacket from an Air Deccan flight.

During an x-ray of the check-in baggage of the passenger, who was travelling to Mumbai from Kolkata on Thursday, the airport staff identified a life jacket, an official spokesperson of the airlines said in a statement on Friday.

After physical check, it was confirmed that he was carrying a life jacket of Air Deccan and during questioning, he told the investigators that he had allegedly stolen it from Guwahati-Kolkata flight, the spokesperson said.

The passenger has been arrested and booked under section 379 (theft) and 411 (receiving a stolen property) of the IPC.

"Life jackets kept in the flight are important safety requirement as they would play a key role during unforeseen emergencies.

"We have invested in high quality life jackets to ensure that safety factor is not compromised. After this incident, I hope passengers would not be tempted to attempt such things during their journey, as it might prove to be a safety hazard," Chief Operating Officer of Air Deccan Warwick Brady was quoted by the release as saying.
