THE MENTALLY challenged persons develop natural sexual urges and feelings due to hormonal changes as they attain physical adulthood. But owing to lack of intellectual capabilities they are not able to manage these feelings making it very important for the guardians to manage their wards especially during this juncture, expert Dr Amit Agrawal said here recently.

Dr Agrawal was addressing a parents’ meeting organised by the Parents’ Society of MP for Welfare of Persons with Disabilities on the topic ‘management of teenaged mentally challenged’. Dr Agrawal further cautioned that it is important to save these children from sexual exploitation and they are unable to protect themselves or handle their feelings.

He added that the issue of sterilisation of mentally disabled persons is still a matter of controversy and thus proper management is the only solution at present.

The co-speaker at the meeting Dr Vandana Agrawal emphasised on the fact that if the teenaged mentally challenged persons are not toilet-trained then the male wards should be taken care of by male guardians and the female wards by female guardians.

This, she said, is important because touch sensation plays a vital role in enhancing sexual feeling and management might become difficult if members of opposite sex handle such persons.

President of the society Satyendra Saksena and secretary Dr Hemlata Dahare proposed the vote of thanks. The issue of marriage of mentally challenged would be taken up during the next workshop by the society, to be held in last week of February.
