THOUGH THERE have been some signs of improvement in the condition of BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan, he is still critical.

Mahajan, who had shown signs of consciousness on Saturday night, seemed to be making good progress on Sunday. But by evening his blood pressure began to fluctuate and he had to be rushed to the operation theatre. Excess fluid from his body was drained and a procedure to remove and redo the surgical packing around internal organs — which was scheduled for Monday — was done on Sunday night. The procedure lasted around two hours.

The Hinduja Hospital authorities said Mahajan's condition remained critical but his vital signs had somewhat stabilised. A team of surgeons at Hinduja Hospital in consultation with Dr Mohammed Rela, a liver transplant specialist flown in from London, decided to drain the fluid that had accumulated in Mahajan's body as his  kidneys were not functioning properly. This led to fluid accumulation.

Although no "surgery" was conducted, doctors used dialysis to drain the fluid, and removed the heavy surgical pads they had placed around the pancreas and the liver to stop the bleeding.

Earlier, at around 5 p.m. Mahajan's condition appeared to be improving as the oozing of blood from the liver had significantly reduced and he recognised his son Rahul and brother-in-law Gopinath Munde.
