SCORES OF engineering students belonging to the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) allegedly went on the rampage at the weekly market near Kotra Sultanabad late on Wednesday night. They were angry because two college professors were earlier manhandled in the market by the fruit-sellers.

The ‘haat’ was messed up as a result of the fracas and the sellers left the spot leaving their handcarts. Sources said the incident occurred at around 10:30 pm.

The students from the hostels of MANIT stormed into the weekly market and allegedly thrashed whoever came in their way. The fruit-sellers were their prime target. The fracas continued for well over half-an-hour and by the time the police were rushed to the spot the entire market was in a mess with carts lying upside down and fruits, vegetables strewn all over.

The students were angry because two college professors who had gone to the market haggled with the mango sellers and later had an altercation with them.

The sellers manhandled the duo and one of them was reportedly injured. The professors returned and as the news reached the hostels, the students rushed to the weekly ‘haat’ where they beat up the sellers. They pelted stones at the shops and attacked the roadside sellers.

The police had reportedly caught three mango-sellers Tahir, Balia and Arif. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two policemen were attached to police lines for allegedly booking two persons after they refused to hand over the bribe demanded by the constables. Puran Singh and Hakeem were caught for adulterating milk on April 28 in Khajuri.

The disciplinary action has been taken against two constables Bharat and Parashar after inquiry.
