The students of GGM Science College and SPMR Commerce College on Friday held protests, on respective college premises, against the rape of five mentally-challenged girls in a home being run by an NGO at Channi Rama.
Demanding strict action against the accused, the students of both colleges said there are several reports of crime against women, including incidences of kidnapping and rape of mentally-challenged girls in Reasi, which is a horrific situation.
"We want the authorities concerned to wake up and safeguard the honour of women. The incidents are an indication that no woman is safe in our state," said Nitesh of SPMR Commerce College, who is contesting college elections for the post of president.
Raising slogans against alleged inaction by the government, students demanded justice for the victim girls. They said it was shameful for the state government that some people running NGO made prey of the mentally-challenged girls right under the nose of the district administration. They demanded stern action against the accused of sexual abuse of mentally-challenged girls.
"I wonder how safe women are in the state. When the entire country and the state are fighting against the heinous crime of sexual assault on women, how can authorities of such protective homes engage in crime against women?" said Chitrangna Khosla, a student of SPMR Commerce College.
Expressing shock over the helplessness of the mentally-challenged girls, the students said stringent measures should be taken against culprits and merely arresting the director and chowkidar of the home for mentally-challenged children was not enough. They demanded strict punishment for the culprits and said others allegedly involved in the crime should also be exposed.
