The JM Lyngdoh Committee on student union elections has put a cap on poll expenses at Rs 5,000 and a ban on all donations from political parties.

The Committee, whose report was presented in the Supreme Court which accepted it, also recommended a ban on printed posters and banners, allowing only handmade ones.

Accepting the recommendations, a Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat on Friday directed their implementation as an interim measure till the court finally decided the matter.

The court accepted the panel's view that candidature for these elections was open only for regular/full-time students.

Other recommendations of the panel include 25 years as the maximum age limit and compulsory attendance of 75 per cent for candidates.

Taking up a petition filed by Kerala University, the apex court had constituted the six-member committee headed by the former Chief Election Commissioner to give its report to streamline and regulate the students' union elections.
