THE MEMBERS OF a probe committee constituted by the Communist Party of India (ML) visited Keula Khurd village under Chowk police station of Maharajganj district on Sunday to inquire into the suicide committed by a woman with her daughters.

The woman, forced by poverty, jumped into the Pyasi  river with her five daughters on Friday.

The committee members said that the district administration was apathetic towards the tragedy and demanded the officials to fix accountability for the lapses that led to the incident.

While the locals claimed that poverty was the reason for the tragedy, the district administration felt that the incident resulted from a dispute between the husband and the wife. District magistrate of Maharajganj also constituted a two-member committee to inquire into the incident.

The CPIM-L probe committee members led by Rajesh Sahni reached the village and released its report with six-point charter of demands.  They feel that the incident shows that people’s welfare programmes are hardly implemented. They said that Ghurali, the husband of the woman, was the sole breadwinner of the family.
