Two weeks after Delhi police registered a murder case in the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, the Special Investigation Team questioned her husband Shashi Tharoor on Monday.

Sources in the department claimed that Tharoor was questioned within 12 hours of receiving a legal notice to join the investigation.

Tharoor might be served a second notice on Tuesday for further questioning.

Pushkar, a high-profile socialite, was found dead inside room 345 of the Leela Palace on January 17, 2014 in mysterious circumstances. After a thorough investigation, Delhi police registered a case of murder against unknown persons on January 1, 2015 after a delay of a year. The FIR mentions that Pushkar had been poisoned.

Sources close to Tharoor suggested that while he received a legal notice under section 160 CrPC, he later met his battery of lawyers before reaching the Vasant Vihar police station at approximately 8:15pm. “He came back from Kerala on Monday afternoon and had a thorough discussion with his lawyers about the current status of the case,” said an official deployed with Tharoor’s security.

Delhi police chief, BS Bassi, earlier on Monday hinting at early questioning of Tharoor had said, “No, he has not been questioned yet, we will soon do that. He is out of town. He is returning today and will be questioned as per the need of the SIT.”

Police officials’ privy to the investigation revealed that while a detailed questionnaire with more than 100 questions had been prepared for Tharoor, he is likely to be questioned in four rounds for a chronological understanding of events that led to Pushkar’s death.

“Tharoor was brought-in for questioning last so that the SIT could be better prepared for him. He was asked to elaborate on his marital status with Pushkar before she died and the injuries on her body,” said a police official.

The FIR report in the case mentions 15 injuries, including an injection mark, which could have been used to poison Pushkar.

Tharoor is likely to be quizzed on his whereabouts prior to the incident, his relationship status with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar, the IPL controversy, their trip to Dubai, the constant fights.

“He will be questioned on the couple’s fight a day prior to her death, the BBM messages she wanted to copy. He will be asked about the treatment she was undergoing in Kerala despite the autopsy suggesting that she was fit,” said a police official.
