Former Union minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is likely to appear on Sunday before a special investigation team (SIT) probing his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death. He may be asked about the needle mark on Pushkar’s left finger and other injury marks on her body, sources said.

Addressing the media for the first time after the Delhi Police filed a case of murder in the year-old death of Pushkar, the Congress leader Friday sought “a professional probe without any predetermined motive”. In the brief press meet held in Kerala’s temple town of Guruvayur, Tharoor ducked key questions, saying the matter was under investigation.

“My silence was not sinister… Public discussion on an issue in police realm is an insult to the probe,” he said.

Tharoor added he would “fully cooperate” with the investigation. The SIT is learnt to have asked him to join the investigation at the earliest. Though no senior police officer was willing to go on record, sources said Tharoor was asked on Thursday to appear before investigating officers following which he wrote to Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi saying he would reach the Capital during the weekend.

“It is not interrogation but we have asked him to come forward and provide more details. His statement will help us fill the gaps in the sequence of events. There are some queries about the injection mark on her (Sunanda’s) finger. The KIMS hospital authorities in Kerala said there was no injection administered to her on her left finger,” said a police source. Tharoor may also be asked to explain certain “injury marks” on Sunanda’s body, the source added. The meeting is most likely to happen at the DCP office in Hauz Khas.

Investigating officials have questioned almost all persons connected to the case and will use the statements they made before the SDM a year ago.

Tharoor’s help Narayan Singh in his statement to the SDM had claimed that the couple’s family friend Sunil Thakru had paid a visit to Pushkar at The Leela Palace Hotel in Chanakyapuri where she checked into on January 15, 2014, two days before her death.

Thakru later admitted that he met Pushkar but refused to speculate on the case.
