Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal has written to the Prime Minister seeking additonal radio waves for the GSM based mobile companies, a segment in which his company operates.

"I do make a strong appeal to you to ensure that GSM and 3GSM, which is the mainstay and hope of the wireless world, does not get stifled on account of any misinformation.

"The GSM industry is in dire need of more spectrum and you have been kind enough to take note of this crying need. I have no doubt that the leading wireless standard - GSM - will receive a fair and equitable treatment," Mittal said.

Mittal joins a spate of industry leaders like Ratan Tata and Hutchison Essar chief Asim Ghosh writing to the Prime Minister to give enough spectrum to their respective mobile telephony segments like CDMA and GSM based mobile services.

Mittal said, "I am writing this letter to add voice to seek your support to end the unnecessary and unhealthy debate which has once again erupted in the mobile telephony sector. The sector has already suffered enough due to turbulent regulatory shifts in the last few years".
