Ruskin Bond
Price — Rs 250

In his book, The Night Train at Deoli and Other Stories, Ruskin Bond addresses his readers as ‘gentle’. When we are young and vibrant, there are hopes and dreams.

With age, these dreams get trampled and eventually fade away. This collection of short stories gives a vivid description of the depth and flux of human emotion. Ruskin Bond draws simple yet heart warming sketches of each character.

The book starts with The Woman on Platform No 8, where a young boy bonds with a middle-aged woman he met on a railway platform in just an hour. Another fascinating story is The Thief, where ‘Deepak’, as he calls himself returns the money he stole from his employer.

The sole motive behind this deed was that he wanted to learn how to write sentences which would get him more money than he had stolen. The Neighbour's Wife is another remarkable story where a 25-year-old bachelor takes to, and eventually marries an older woman.

The book ends with a touching story A Love of Long Ago where the author reveals a love lost ages ago. It began with a harmless romance of a few stolen moments ending in a heart-wrenching separation.

The stories in the book revolve around love, loss, achievements, compassion, distressing moments, simplicity, struggle and cupidity. They take us away from the madding crown and transport us into a different world altogether.

Ruskin Bond was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999. He has always been mesmerised his readers with the simplicity of Indian lifestyle.

This favourite children’s author residing presently in Mussoorie paints small towns with his vibrant words.
