We all love humour, especially when others are part of this humour. Our country is an amalgam of several races, castes, regimes that have come and settled, those who have plundered and left their kinship here.

And this has happened since the age of Aryans, the first civilisation on this planet, supposedly. Naturally, everyone became a subject of everyone’s joke. Gleeful name-dropping, worship of the successful, face flattery accompanied with backbiting and envy to the extent of sickness are some of the highlights of We the Indians.

This immaculate, extremely subtle yet hitting under the belt introduction on the backcover says it all about the man who has time and again written with a sharp pen.

Khushwant Singh’s deft book is at first approached with the hormone of human humour getting excited. Despite knowing that this is about us, there seems to be a deliberate indifference shown initially and the speculation that how fantastic this mockery will turn out to be with each page engrosses the reader.

But wait, We the Indians, does not admonish the diverse citizens, but merely re-tells that encompasses history, religion, education, corruption and sex. For those who know Singh and even the ones who don’t, there is this obvious reaction that the last aspect had to be touched.

Our double standards, diplomacy in non-diplomatic situations, total non-acceptance of anything vital for their growth, how corruption is in our blood, their blasphemy and them criticising every other entity on this planet.

The book does not try to adumbrate but paints a stark picture. Protests for every other reason but the real one drives a major chunk of our population.

Growth in any sector is determined by a lot of factors — backbiting, sycophancy, corruption et al. What do you call this? A nation! A civilisation! The right answer – We the Indians!
