The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed further sealing operations in the capital following the notification of the Master Plan for Delhi 2021 that grants relief to affected traders.
A bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and SH Kapadia granted the stay on a mention by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) counsel who brought to the court's notice the notification of the Master Plan late Wednesday.
While granting the stay, the court directed that the MCD's fresh application to defer sealing be listed for hearing Feb 12.
The capital's civic authority said in its application that the monitoring committee had Feb 6 directed the MCD to continue sealing of commercial establishments in residential areas.
The MCD said all the 2,183 roads in which commercial establishments were located had been included in the 2021 Master Plan which categorised them for commercial mixed land use and pedestrian shopping.
In view of the notification of the Master Plan, the monitoring committee's direction to carry out sealing operations may not be necessary, the MCD stated.
It therefore sought a direction to defer all further sealing till the court finally examined the Master Plan 2021 and considered the matter in its entire perspective.
