Surrendered chairman of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Julius Dorphang has been arrested and released on bail in an assault case.

Police said Dorphang was arrested last night under IPC Sections 324 and 34 and was granted bail by a court on Tuesday.

Dorphang is alleged to have assaulted and seriously injured another surrendered cadre of the outfit, Shemphang Kharluki, at a brawl at a city discotheque on Saturday last.

Kharluki later lodged an FIR at Sadar police station against Dorphang.

A Special Operations Team personnel, who was also involved in the brawl at the discotheque, was also arrested along with Dorphang.

Dorphang had surrendered to the government in 2007.
