Security forces on Sunday shot dead a suspected Pakistani militant of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) outfit at an orchard in Baramulla district, even as a search is underway for others of the group who fled after opening fire at the personnel.

This was the second incident in Baramulla district in two days when a wanted ultra was killed.

Official sources said the ultra identified as Abu Umair alias Ali Qausar, allegedly a Pakistan national, was shot dead in a gun battle with security forces. He was affiliated with HuM and wanted in several militancy-related incidents.

The encounter took place near Model Town in Sopore, 55 kms from Srinagar, around 1600 hrs when police assisted by Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off an orchard.

The hiding militants, as sources said, opened fire and in the ensuing gun-battle lasting about half-an-hour, a militant was killed. A search was underway for others of the group who fled during the gun-battle.

On Friday, police had shot dead a dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen militant Shamim Ahmad Soda alias Rizwan, wanted in connection with the last month's shooting incidents in Srinagar, in an orchard at village Poshwani in Baramulla district.
