Indian students in Australia are afraid that hype in the Indian media about the attacks on Indians may fuel more such attacks. Using words like “racist” and “unsafe” for all of Australia makes them feel vulnerable.
“Due to the hype, we fear we may become targets,” said Rahul Gupta (21), a student at the University of Technology, Sydney.
The attack on Shravan Kumar Tirthala was the first in a recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia.
The point they are making is that these attacks have been reported mostly from Melbourne and that doesn’t make the whole of Australia racist.
