Talking computer will know your needs

In the coming decade, you might be greeted by a talking and thinking computer-animated face instead of the boring mouse, keyboard and touch- screen when you go to book a ticket or withdraw money from the bank.

In the coming decade, you might be greeted by a talking and thinking computer-animated face instead of the boring mouse, keyboard and touch- screen when you go to book a ticket or withdraw money from the bank.

Australian researchers are working to create computer generated faces that understand our needs without needing us to punch in the details through the keyboard, touchscreen or a mouse, while making a transaction.

"At the moment, we use keyboards and mouses to communicate. But what people really want with computers is that they actually understand what you're doing and know what you want and can interact with you a lot more effectively and naturally," ABC Online quoted Professor Denis Burnham, director of the MARCS Auditory Laboratories at the University of Western Sydney, as saying.

Burnham, a behavioural psychologist and his team are using technologies such as computer animation, speech recognition and computer-generated dialogue to construct the talking, thinking head that emulates face-to-face conversation.

He claims that his system will include visual cues, such as different mouth shapes and face expressions that help us understand what is being said.

Also, the head will be capable of tailoring its communication to different types of people, by accessing different databases.
