A group of unidentified persons killed two men, chopped their heads off and dumped the severed heads outside a hospital at Chidambaram, some 230 km from state capital Chennai in the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 2.30am, when the gang of motorcycle riders barged into the house of the slain brothers at Annamalai Nagar near Chidambaram and attacked all those present with sharp weapons.
The attackers had tied scarfs to hide their faces. Six injured have been admitted to the same hospital, in front of which the two severed heads were thrown by the gang that escaped after the incident.
But before fleeing, they threw bombs near the hospital to deter anyone from chasing or challenging them, police said.
The deceased, Kumar, 34, and his younger brother Rajesh, 32, were into auto business. In the wee hours of Turesday, some unidentified persons barged into the house and began attacking them without any provocation or reason.
Cuddalore SP A Radhika, under whose jurisdiction the area falls inspect the spot and formed five special teams to nab the culprits.
Police said it was a case of previous rivalry and were confident of arresting the attackers. But the relatives of the slain brothers refused to take the bodies from the hospital alleging that police lethargy was responsible for the killing.
The police knew of an impending attack on Kumar and his brother, locals alleged. They said police had detected the plot to target Kumar and his brother while investigating a previous bomb explosion incident in the village a few months ago.
