The leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Lalji Tandon was on Friday detained in Kanpur to prevent him from going to Aligarh to visit riot-affected areas there.

Police detained Tandon at the Central Railway Station where he had planned to catch Gomti Express to go to Aligarh.

He was taken to the Circuit House here and later let off.

The BJP leader left for Lucknow by road.

Tandon told reporters that the Samajwadi Party-led government has failed to control violence in the state.
