Tehelka Sexual Assault Case

Hours after he spent his first night in lock-up, Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal was brought to a magistrate’s court on Sunday where he was remanded in police custody for six days.

“The police sought 14 days. After our arguments, the court granted them six days,” said his lawyer Sandeep Kapoor. “We are satisfied,” said senior defence counsel Geeta Luthra.

Tejpal’s family members and friends weren’t allowed in the court room, neither was the media.

The Panaji police station lock-up does not have a fan and inmates sleep on the floor. He spent Saturday night there with six other men, including two accused of murder, a police official said.

Tejpal’s arrest formalities began at 8.30pm Saturday, 10 minutes after the sessions court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. Tejpal, accused of raping a junior colleague, had been waiting at the crime branch office since 5pm. After his arrest, he was questioned there till 12.30am.

All this while, his family — including his wife, daughters, brother and sister — waited outside. They brought him food and other basics as well as something to read, police sources said.

At 12.30am, Tejpal was taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital for a routine check, and from there to the lock-up a little before 3am.

Tejpal will be allowed home food and clothes and to talk with his lawyer once a day. He is unlikely to get much sleep over the next five days. “We wake them up at any time and interrogate them,” said an officer.
