The Telugu Desam Party on Sunday expressed displeasure at Tamil Nadu government's Rs one lakh compensation to the families of those killed in Pallipat fire cracker godown tragedy, and demanded to upgrade the ex-gratia amount to Rs five lakh.
Of 32 people killed in the Friday's incident, 24 were from Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu government simply tried to wash its hands off by announcing a measly compensation of Rs one lakh to the families of each of those killed in the mishap, TDP deputy leader, Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu alleged in a statement.
"This is highly discriminatory. Last year the Tamil Nadu government had paid Rs five lakh as compensation when a similar blast killed some people in that state. Since most of the victims this time hailed from Andhra Pradesh, it was paying only Rs one lakh as compensation," he alleged.
He also found fault with the Andhra Pradesh government for not exerting pressure on Tamil Nadu and securing higher compensation for the victims' families. "Prevail upon the TN government and ensure that the compensation amount is enhanced to Rs five lakh per family," he told state government.
He demanded that Andhra government, on its part, should increase the ex-gratia from Rs one lakh to Rs three lakh for each family.
