A school here has sacked a teacher and ordered a probe against another for beating up a Class VIII student during a trekking trip to Manali on May 28.
The incident left the student, 13-year-old Rattanpreet Singh, dazed but it was too much of a shock for his mother, Gurpreet Kaur, who died on way to the hospital.
Three teachers and 56 students of Yadavindra Public School (YPS) had last month gone on a week-long trip to Manali, 310 km from here. On May 28, teachers Harish Kumar and Anil Pathania walloped Rattanpreet after he demanded his money back, the boy’s classmates alleged.
Rattanpreet made a distress call to his parents the following day and complained how the teachers had assaulted him. Alarmed, his father went to the school to inquire while his mother died out of shock.
The YPS authorities subsequently sacked Kumar and ordered an inquiry against Pathania. “Corporal punishment is unacceptable. If found guilty, Pathania will also have to leave his job,” said school vice-principal Anita Kashyap. All aspects of the incident were being looked into, she added.
Students who returned from the trip also accused the two teachers of taking away all their money beyond the Rs 500 they were allowed to retain. Rattanpreet gave Rs 500 while another student handed over Rs 200. “The teachers began slapping, kicking and hitting Rattanpreet with a stick after he asked for his money,” a student told HT.
“I hope the school authorities will take strict action against the erring teachers by lodging criminal complaint against
them,” said Rattanpreet’s father Barinder Singh.
Principal Harish Dhillon had on Monday visited Singh’s house and assured all possible support from the school.
