It is back to school for Delhi government and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) teachers. Come October 31 and 20,000 teachers will have to appear for an examination in the subject they teach. The teachers will appear for Class X and Class XII papers set by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and external examiners will conduct the exam.
The Delhi education principal secretary and director will also join the teachers in testing their knowledge. Principal secretary Rina Ray will appear for the Class X English paper. Director, education, Vijay Kumar will appear for the Class X mathematics paper. This is the first phase of the exercise. Assistant teachers will appear for the exams in the second phase of the exercise.
“The idea is to test how much you know about the subject you teach, and whether you are capable of handling the Class X or XII CBSE examination. Some teachers grumbled but stopped complaining after they were told that we would also take the exam,” said Ray. The examination will be three hours and 15 minutes long.
What about those who do no fare well? “Those who are weak in their subject will be trained further. But this will also help us identify those who are excellent at their job,” Ray added. Directorate officials say the exam will also help identify problem areas for students.
