The world as you know it will come to an end, doomsday forecasters say. They might well have been addressing geeks. HT reads the tea leaves to see what 2012 has in store in global tech labs.

Electric cars
Fuel prices are skyrocketing even as environment is getting dirtier, surely it is time to go electric. Fast depleting oil resources mean the time for half measures like hybrids is over. The automotive world is now serious on electric cars, and so will India be
in 2012.

Tablet computers
Initially seen as a glorified e-reader, Tablet PCs received a spirited response in 2011 as a mobile content consumption device. India also has its own nano-priced version, the Akaash whose full impact would be felt in 2012. Soon, carrying a laptop will appear as uncool as wearing bell-bottoms.

Siri/Iris
It took Samsung barely 8 hours to present an alternative to Apple's revolutionary speech recognition Siri, with the Iris for the Android users. A natural progression from type to touch to voice, Siri/Iris take voice recognition to the next level to capture the flighty imagination of the tech savvy.

4G telecom
If 3G made news in India in 2011 for reasons good or bad, 2012 will be the year of 4G, which surpasses 3G in data transfer as well as the ability to use multiple high speed networks at the same time. The consumer may not need all that speed, but just like 3G in 2011, 4G is bound to become a must-have.

Cloud computing
In all these years of computing, one thing is unchanged... the need for a hard drive. Cloud computing seeks to change that. It allows consumers to use applications without installation and access personal files at any computer.

Voice remote control
2012 could be the beginning of the end of the humble remote control. Voice controlled remote control is the equivalent of Apple’s Iris in televisions that is set to replace the archaic push button technology. Give your thumbs some much-needed rest.
