Teenager death sparks trouble in Guna village

VILLAGERS OF Umri gram panchayat headquarters, 25 kms from Guna, resorted to destruction of property and attacked the police station after a boy got drowned in a pond in the village on Wednesday. They set fire to several kiosks and soon the entire market was closed. Irate villagers also allegedly misbehaved with policemen at the police outpost.

VILLAGERS OF Umri gram panchayat headquarters, 25 kms from Guna, resorted to destruction of property and attacked the police station after a boy got drowned in a pond in the village on Wednesday. They set fire to several kiosks and soon the entire market was closed. Irate villagers also allegedly misbehaved with policemen at the police outpost.

Local Janpad member Pratipal Singh tried to control the situation as district minister in charge Rustum Singh, accompanied by SP Hari Singh Yadav and ASP Avdhesh Goswami, was on tour.

Several senior officials including Guna SDM Arun Parmar, SDOP Gaur, Cantt station in charge L Srivas, Rupesh Dubey, BP Tiwari and RI Kanhauha reached the spot for investigation.

According to SDOP Gaur, deceased Damodar Sahu (15) was playing cards with his friends near the pond. When the group spotted policemen coming their way, they got fearful and in the scurry, Damodar fell into the pond. Villagers, who witnessed the incident, alleged that the policemen did not allow Damodar to come out of the pond else he could have been saved.

SDOP Gaur said the boy got drowned probably after he got entangled in creepers inside the pond. He said the villagers not only set fire to a kiosk, they also damaged three motorcycles. Station in charge Srivas said the body of the deceased would be sent for post mortem at Guna district hospital.
