There is an air of uncertainty in the Tehelka office since Wednesday, when it was announced in the newsroom that after being accused of misconduct with a woman colleague, editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has decided to “recuse” himself from editing the magazine.
“Managing editor Shoma Chaudhury told everyone gathered there about what had happened and a mail from her followed soon announcing that Tarun will not edit the magazine for next six months as atonement. Since then, the unfolding saga has left everyone at Tehelka in a shock with things spiralling out control since. Everybody is worried about Tehelka’s future as well as their own,” said a Tehelka staffer requesting anonymity.
Ever since the mail written by Chaudhury, with which she appended Tejpal’s mail extending an unconditional apology to his colleague, went viral on the internet on Wednedsay night, the staffer said, everyone at Tehelka is waiting for things to settle down. But it hasn’t happened so far since the matter has now reached the Goa police.
Officially, the magazine staff was told about the incident on Wednesday, but it was discussed in hushed voices by the employees who knew about it since the three-day THiNK Fest in Goa, organised by Tehelka, that ended on November 10.
“The victim had confided with few of her trusted colleagues about the incident. But she made it official by mailing Shoma earlier this week. And after that, the management took a day to draft the response,” said the staffer.
