AN SDO of the telephone department was duped of Rs 50,000 in the name of providing employees of BSNL cover under a medical scheme. A few days ago a man claiming to be Ajay Hardia of Devi Ahilya Hospital and Research Centre contacted Rajesh Dixit, SDO Telephones, Old CTO Compound.

He had a letter, purportedly from BSNL chief general manager C L Bhanot, which said that the Devi Ahilya Hospital had been empanelled in the list of hospitals where BSNL employees could avail treatment and if the 823 employees working under him deposited Rs 2,100 each to become members they would be given cover of up to Rs 17 lakh.

Convinced, the employees gave Rs 50,000 in advance with the understanding that the remaining money would be deposited later.

However, when attempts were made to deposit the money, it was found that there was no such scheme being run by the hospital and it was also discovered that the letter from Bhanot was a fake. Also two mobile numbers given by the accused were fake. Sanyogitaganj police have registered a case of fraud following complaint by Dixit.
