Hundreds of telephones went dead on Sunday in parts of south Delhi following the theft of a large quantity of underground cables, said officials.

The theft took place after midnight on Saturday near the Police Training Centre at Malviya Nagar, leading to a major fault that affected hundreds of telephones in Saket and adjoining areas, a Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) official told IANS.

"We are getting lots of complaints about dead phones," the officer said. "From what we know there is a major problem, and it is going to take some time putting the phones back in order."
