india Updated: Feb 08, 2007 16:01 IST
Highlight Story

THE POLICE had to rush to Karbala Maidan once again on Wednesday morning after some persons from Dhobi Ghat area came and put a few flowers and spread cow dung over a spot, which they claim is a Nag temple. The police reached the spot and arrested five persons including a woman, Sunder Bai, in this connection.

When news of the arrest spread, a large number of saffron activists led by corporator Parag Londe and Rajendra Bhusari (who is husband of corporator Rajshree Bhusari) reached the spot and demanded that the arrested persons be released.

The police arrested another 25 persons, including Londe and Bhusari, and sent them to the CI jail from where they were released in the evening.

The police kept a vigil in the entire area and all evidence of the flowers and cow dung was removed from the Karbala Maidan. Late in the evening, there was a rumour that those released from jail were going to come to Karbala Maidan once again and police became alert. However, no one turned up.
