Tension erupted in Chattri Chowk area of Ujjain after some people belonging to two different communities entered into a brawl over playing loud music during Durga idol immersion.

Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in three police station areas including Jiwajiganj, Kharakua and Kotwali.

Additional police force from Jiwajiganj and Kharakua police stations was deployed in Gopal Mandir and Jama Masjid area to avert any untoward incident.

Trouble started around 7pm when a procession was taken out from Tilkeshwar Mahadev temple area under Jiwajiganj police station to Kshipra river for immersion of an idol of Goddess Durga. When the procession reached Jama Masjid area, some people belonging to a particular community opposed playing of loud music.

When people participating in the procession ignored their protest, somebody started pelting stones on the procession.

After stone pelting, scores of people belonging to both the communities entered into a brawl. When the news reached Jiwajiganj and Kharakua police stations, heavy police force from both the police stations reached the spot and dispersed them.

At least five people were injured in the lathi-charge by the police and they were taken to district hospital for treatment.

District collector Kavindra Kiyawat said, "It was only a mild brawl. Administration will take stringent action against anti-socials to maintain law and order in the city."
